Regulations and Guidelines

All personnel using the General Shop equipment are responsible for obtaining certification from their immediate supervisor or the faculty member in charge of their project. The shop supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all personnel understand and comply with all safety rules and requirements. The individual will sign a "statement of acknowledgement" that they have had prior experience or training and that they understand the safe operating procedures. The "statement of acknowledgement" will also require the signature of the individual's supervisor.

Guidelines

  1. Operation of machinery or equipment requires certification of training through prior experience or through proper training.

  2. Operation of machinery or equipment should conform to the standard operating procedures established by the company who manufactures the machinery or equipment. This information can be obtained from the shop supervisor.

  3. All personnel are responsible for bringing their own goggles or safety glasses with side guards to the shop and must wear them upon entry. The shop will have safety glasses available for interdepartmental transfer charges; no personal checks or cash sales allowed.

  4. Long hair, ties, jewelry, and loose apparel will be tied up or removed.

  5. Shoes and clothing, offering the proper protection for the job being performed, shall be worn.

  6. All personnel should inspect all equipment prior to use and be aware of emergency procedures in case of machine failure.

  7. All personnel should exercise extreme caution with regard to hand/finger movement. This danger is present in most of the equipment in the shop.

  8. All accidents, injuries, or near misses must be reported to the person in charge as soon as possible. Reporting Forms will be available in the shop.

  9. Everybody using the shop must sign in at the desk.

Anyone not following established guidelines will be given a warning and may be asked to leave the shop.
