Thunderbird for Windows

ISE - Thunderbird for Windows Support - Version 2

1.  Start the installation of Thunderbird within your Microsoft Windows environment.  You should see an initial screen as shown below.  Click the 'Next' button.

2.  Click "I accept the terms in the License Agreement" and then click the 'Next' button.  Install as desired through the following screens.

3.  When you initially start Thunderbird, you will see the 'New Account Setup' wizard.  Click 'Email account' and then click 'Next'.

4.  Enter your name and email address - click the 'Next' button.

5.  Select 'IMAP' as the type of incoming server you are using.  Use the server indicated below for your incoming and outgoing server.  Click the 'Next' button.

6.  Enter your username and click the 'Next' button.

7.  You can use 'Exchange' for your account name (or anything else you like).  Click the 'Next' button.  Click the 'Finish' button on the following screen.

8.  Click the 'OK' button - this is expected.

9.  Click on 'Tools' and then 'Account Settings'.  If you will be using Thunderbird off campus or on a portable computer, the Outgoing Server (SMTP) should be set to smtp-relay.tamu.edu.  Click on 'Server Settings' on the left hand side of the window.

10.  The port number should be set to 993.  Also, please select 'SSL' as your secure connection type.  'Use secure authentication' should remain unchecked.  Click the 'OK' button.

11.  Click the 'Get Mail' button.  The certificate screen shown below should be set to accept the certificate permanently.  Click the 'OK' button.

12.  Enter your password and then click the 'OK' button.

13.  Select 'Tools' and then 'Account Settings'.  Choose 'Copies & Folders' on the left hand side.  Modify 'When sending messages, automatically:' to use 'Other' - 'Sent Items on Exchange'.

14.  Click 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' on the left side of the window.  Click the 'Edit' button and set the port number to 567 and the secure connection type to TLS.  Verify that 'Use name and password' is selected.  If you are using 'smtp-relay.tamu.edu', change the port number to 587 and enter your NetID username.  Click 'OK'.

15.  Click 'File' and then 'Subscribe'.  At minimum, you should select Drafts, Inbox, and Sent Items.  You may subscribe other folders as desired.  Click 'OK'.

16.  Select 'Tools', 'Options' and then click 'Advanced'.  Click the 'Config Editor' button.

17.  In the 'Filter' field, enter "mail.server.server".  Look for the 'Preference Name' "mail.server.serverX.name" that contains the value of the account name that needs to be updated for Exchange.  Remember the value of X associated with this name.  In the example below, the preference name is "mail.server.server2.name" - the string value to the right is Exchange.

18.  Right click in an open area of the windows and click 'New' - 'String'.  Enter "mail.server.serverX.trash_folder_name" (without the quotes - X is the value from the above exercise).  See the example below.  Click 'OK'.

19.  In the next window, enter "Deleted Items" as shown below.  Click 'OK'.

20.  Next, filter on "mail.imap.expunge".  You should now see "mail.imap.expunge_after_delete".

21.  Right click "mail.imap.expunge_after_delete" and click 'Toggle' to set the value to "true".  Close this window.  Click 'OK' on Options.  Restart Thunderbird.

22.  Click 'File' and then 'Subscribe'.  Locate 'Trash' and uncheck the box.  Click 'Unsubscribe' and then click 'OK'.  Delete 'Trash' from your Exchange account (although it should disappear on its own) and from Outlook (if you use Outlook).

Everything should now be working!  If you continue to have problems, contact Mark Henry by email or you can call 862-3452.
