Implementation Consultant, Instituto Suger Montano, Guatemala City, Guatemala, Sponsored by UNESCO – United Nations, June 22-24, 1999.  Trained over 75 schoolteachers.  Training included active learning and teaming.  Assisted President of the institute in the development of classroom layouts for new buildings.

Curriculum Development Activities

• Industrial Engineering Integrated Curriculum – member of the planning and development team; developer of the manufacturing operations course.

Laboratory Development

• Automation Laboratory (1988) – this laboratory was developed to support the graduate and undergraduate courses in robotics.  The lab consisted of several robotics arms and a tabletop physical simulator.
• Electronics Manufacturing Laboratory (1990) – this laboratory supported research in electronics manufacturing.  A state-of-the-art electronics assembly machine (Robot World) was part of the equipment in this laboratory.
• Electronic Packaging Laboratory (2001) – this laboratory will be developed with an equipment donation from Amkor Technology Incorporated and a seed grant from the Texas Engineering Experiment Station.

Significant Teaching Materials Developed

• FactoryCAD Manual – a tutorial for using the FactoryCAD software functions and operations.
• Engineering Economy Website – a website with a rich collection of exercises organized by topics.
• MPX Case Study – a case study using the MPX software based on Deere and Company operations.
• Manufacturing Operations Student Manual – a student guide to sources and effect of variability in manufacturing operations.
• Microsoft Excel Cost Modeling Tool – a tool for the economic evaluation of operational planning alternatives.
• Team Training Workshop – a two-hour or four-hour workshop for training student team.
• Capacity Standards and Capacity Model for Electronics Packaging – a student guide for the development of a computerized tool using a real system from industry.
• Active and Collaborative Learning Training – a one-day or two-day workshop for faculty.  Translated to Spanish and Portuguese.
• Physical Simulator of Manufacturing Logistics – a physical simulation in which students participate and learn basic supply chain principles.
• Global Manufacturing Case Studies – industry-based case studies with instructor manuals presenting decision-making in the global enterprise.
•  Industrial Engineering Teaching Modules – educational modules developed using the framework of active/cooperative learning.    

Teaching Innovation

All the courses I teach include the following innovated pedagogical techniques that have been studied and implemented by the Foundation Coalition Program.

• Active and Collaborative Learning – use of this structured pedagogical technique applied to production operations and manufacturing systems modeling.
• Teamwork – use of teaming in and outside the classroom to improve student leaning and provide skills necessary for the workplace.
• Technology-Enabled Education – use of computer applications in the classroom as a way to promote analysis, synthesis and intuition building.
• Integration of Subject Matter – presentation of complex mathematical procedures in the context of real production environments.
• Continuous Improvement through Assessment and Evaluation – use of in class assessment practices for the improvement of the classroom environment.
• Industry Case Studies – used of case studies developed with the participation of industry partners.
• Inclusion of Emerging Technologies – inclusion of recent research developments in undergraduate and graduate courses.
• Team-based Student Evaluation Method – student assessment to promote individual accountability as well as positive interdependence in the team.
